Kokujin Experiences:

The Evolution of Blackness in Japan

Date: 24th Feb, 2021

Time: 19:00-21:00

Location: Zoom & CIC Tokyo, Toranomon

To celebrate Black History Month in Japan, Jaspora is partnering with CIC Tokyo to organize our second event of the year, "Kokujin Experiences: The Evolution of Blackness in Japan."

Black History Month was started in 1926 in the United States to celebrate black people's contributions to American society. Since its inception, Black History Month has spread beyond the US and is now celebrated in countries worldwide. To honor the growing yet often underrepresented black voices in Japanese society, we are hosting this public discussion to explore the diversity of black experiences in Japan from historical and contemporary perspectives.

Prominent black activists, scholars, public figures, and everyday students will reflect on challenges and opportunities black people face in Japan, the 2020 BLM protests, biracial identity, racism and much more within the Japanese context. We invite you to join this thought-provoking discussion to learn, share, and engage with these important yet often undiscussed topics.
