We focused on the theme of redefining African narratives and combating negative stereotypes we hold of ourselves and others hold of Africans. Our members shared some insightful accounts of negative and positive stereotypes they have been subject to and discussed how the diasporan community can collectively or individually redefine the Africa narrative in Japan and around the world
We also had photo exhibition and a short screening of ReVodutions film, ”Like A Knife: The Real Voodoo”, a film aiming to destigmatize Vodu, a traditional West African spiritual and herbal practice pejoratively referred to as ”juju”, ”voodoo”, or ”obeah”. This kicked off a discussion on stereotypes Afro-communities around the world hold of themselves and the cognitive shift required for better self represent.
